A new law signed by Mayor John Street Thursday will ban the use of trans fats in restaurants and food establishments throughout Philadelphia.

Philadelphia is the most recent in a list of cities across the nation to ban trans fat, which increases the risk of heart disease and stroke by increasing bad cholesterol.

The bill calls for a total elimination of all trans fat from restaurants by September 2007.
