Eskin, Manuel Fire Back

After Tuesday night's blow up between Phils manager Charlie Manuel and outspoken radio host Howard Eskin, the gums kept flappin', even though Manuel was in Washington to face off against the Nationals and Eskin was back in Philadelphia. Both stuck to their guns and gave their opinions on Manuel's "throwing of the gauntlet" during a press conference and the screaming match that ensued afterward. It started with a simple quesion from Eskin, who has been on Manuel's back ever since he took the helm of the Phillies.
"I think he went over the line. He’s been going over the line for three years," Manuel said."He questioned who I was as a man, you know, how tough I am,” he added. “The only way I know to tell you guys how tough I am is you got to see it or witness it or feel it or whatever."View ImagesAnd Manuel certainly did let Eskin have it.Here's a recap of what happened Tuesday night -- after three years of tension between the two.During a routine press conference, Eskin hinted that manager Manuel might be a little soft on the Phils.Manuel, notoriously low-key, took the opportunity to show a different side, and NBC 10 caught it all on tape.“Why don’t you drop by my office then?” he asked Eskin in front of reporters at the press conference. “Come in there. I’ll be waiting on you.”And he didn’t let up.“Why don’t you come on in there?” Manuel continued. “I’ll walk down there right now.”And he did, with Eskin not far behind.A loud, verbal fight ensued, with Manuel screaming that the team wants to win and Eskin retorting that he hopes they do.Manuel peppered the radio host with curse words throughout the confrontation, which did not end in his office.Shortly afterward, another altercation broke out in the Phillies’ locker room, where Manuel yelled, “I’ve been growed up. I grew up a long f**king time ago. What’s it to you, anyway?”Manuel was held back and then removed from the room by staffers. On Wednesday, Eskin also fired back, saying Manuel should get tough on his players, not him.“I guess he doesn’t want to get tough on the players, so he’s just got to try to find someone else,” Eskin said.“They’re picking the wrong guy to be mad at,” Eskin continued. ”If Charlie thinks that’s going to spur on his time and that’s going to be a rallying cry for the players, God bless him.”Prior to the fireworks on Tuesday night, the Phils gave up another loss at home after being rained out two games on Sunday and Monday.Pitcher Freddy Garcia gave up two homers in his pitching debut with the Phils. And the battle between Eskin and Manuel seemed to do little to spark the team on Wednesday. The Phils lost 5-4 in 13 innings.Myers MovedManuel announced on Wednesday that Brett Myers would switch over to bullpen duty, bringing Jon Lieber back into the starting roation."I'm not going to be selfish," Myers told mlb.com. "If this is what it takes to get to the playoffs, this is what I'm going to do. If I can be a part of it, that's great."He threw six scoreless innings against the Nationals, but Francisco Rosario gave up a run in the 13th inning and blew it for the Phils.Howard Out
Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard will be out of the starting lineup Thursday night because of a left leg injury. He was hurt while running out a fielder's choice grounder in the 10th inning last night, but stayed in for the rest of Philadelphia's 5-4 loss in 13 innings. The Phillies listed him as day-to-day, saying he sprained the ligament that connects the tibia to the fibia just below the knee.Phan Photos
