DOGS SUFFERING IN HEAT

Dogs In Animal Shelter Panting For Relief

Shelter Workers Say They Need More Air Conditioners

Some of our four-legged friends are really feeling the effects of the overwhelming heat.

Dogs at the Cape May County Animal Shelter are kenneled in rooms without air conditioning and some of those animals are getting sick.

"It's outrageously hot. It's just not right," said Libby Schuck, an animal shelter attendant.

At the Cape May County Animal Shelter, constant hose downs of the dogs reflect what employees said is a dire situation.

"We're trying to cool the dogs down. It's the only way to cool them down with the water because it's too hot in there," Schuck said.

More than 40 homeless dogs are currently spending their days at the shelter in one room.

"They're not moving around like they normally would be," Schuck said.

Staffers said a portable air conditioning unit that was delivered a few days ago and the fans just aren't getting the job done.

"I do not like animals suffering," said John Queenan of the animal shelter.

Outside the shelter at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, an infrared thermometer showed the temperature was topping 100 degrees. At the same time, inside the dog kennels, it was 90 degrees.

Two dogs suffered minor seizures Tuesday and administrators said they believed the seizures were caused by the heat.

"I'd hate to see an animal collapse in there because of heat stroke," Quennan said.

The shelter's director decided to close the shelter to the public Tuesday to keep the dogs as calm as possible. Because it is owned by the county, county officials have to sign off on things like additional air conditioners or central air.

"I'm just asking the county to give me the tools to make the animals comfortable," Queenan said.

A county representative said county officials hadn't heard about the problem until they were contacted by NBC 10. The representative said another portable air conditioner would be installed first thing Wednesday morning.
