The NBC 10 Investigators have uncovered a shocking situation at a local cemetery where more than a dozen cremated remains have been discovered strewn all over an old crematorium.

Darby Township police declared part of Mount Lawn Cemetery a crime scene Wednesday after the NBC 10 Investigators alerted them to the discovery of the scattered remains of dozens of people inside an old crematorium.

Gerald Bright found the remains, videotaped them and brought the video to the NBC 10 Investigators Wednesday morning.

"I turned around and looked in the window and seen what looked to be crushed-up drywall on the floor. But as you looked at it closer, you seen it was the remains of cremated bodies in plastic bags scattered throughout the room," Bright said.

Bright said he saw at least 30 names of deceased individuals scattered on the floor, as well. He said that the back door of the crematorium was open and nothing was secured.

"You don't need to be a detective to figure out that they're human remains," Bright said. "It could be someone's grandma, grandfather, uncle, aunt, you know what I mean? They need to know."

"Somebody needs to answer why."

The cemetery's attorney said someone had stolen the metal wall that held the ashes, and that it probably happened a couple of weeks ago.

"While it did appear to be a very horrific scene inside, it is an act of vandalism," said Craig Alston, an attorney for the cemetery.

Police said they also found bones in the basement. Alston said the cemetery would investigate why the bones were there, but said that discovery was unrelated.

Police said they would continue their investigation.

The cemetery has been previously cited in the past for violations, and the crematorium has not been used for five years, authorities said.

"(I feel) angry, mad, because they are people. I don't know. I think you deserve more than that -- than to be thrown in a trash can and scattered on the floor," Bright said.

When the NBC 10 Investigators arrived at the crematorium to take a look at the scene, apparently somebody called police to find out what they were doing.

When officers arrived, the NBC 10 Investigators showed them what was in the crematorium.

The NBC 10 Investigators went to the cemetery's office looking for the owner, but only came across some cemetery workers.

A number of officials are investigating, including the medical examiner's office, the district attorney's office and Darby Township police.
