Man Killed By Amtrak Train

Significant Delays Reported On R2 Train Line

POSTED: 4:23 pm EST January 4, 2006
UPDATED: 6:48 pm EST January 4, 2006

A man is dead after being hit by an Amtrak train in Delaware County.

According to officials, at 2:19 p.m. Wednesday, a southbound Acela train en route to Washington D.C. hit the unidentified man outside the Folcroft rail station.

There are no fences around the tracks to prevent people from getting onto the track.

The accident caused significant delays in the R2 line during rush hour. As of 4:30, service had been suspended between Wilmington and Philadelphia, but it was restored about 6 p.m. At that time, the four Amtrak train tracks were also back in service.

Officials don't know yet if the man's death was an accident or a suicide. NBC 10 reporter Tim Furlong said it was likely that the victim saw the train coming because the sight line up the track is at least a mile.
