About 4:30 a.m., a sport utility vehicle crashed into the bedroom of Jose Varela, 40, and Blanco Santiago, 32, landing on top of the sleeping couple and killing them. The house is located along busy Route 40, at the Black Horse Pike and Athens Avenue. The couple's three sons ages 16, 14, and 10, were also home at the time of the accident, but they were not injured.
Police have identified the driver of the Chevrolet Blazer as 27-year-old Ober Canales, of Atlantic City. Lt. Ted Kammer, of the Egg Harbor Township Police Department, said that the unlicensed driver tried to flee from the accident scene, but was stopped by witnesses who kept him until police arrived on the scene.Investigators said Canales is a Honduran national who had fraudulent Social Security and resident alien papers with him.Police said that they are looking into a number of possible causes for the crash, including weather conditions and driving under the influence. Police and the Atlantic County prosecutors' office said it was raining hard at the time of the accident.Canales is facing two counts of vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of a fatal accident and driving while intoxicated. He is being held in jail in lieu of $750,000.Relatives said the family was planning to move to a quieter street because they thought the Black Horse Pike was too busy and dangerous.
