A local family was heartbroken when they found out that their adorable new puppy was very sick. But just a day later, Gizmo barked and frolicked for the first time.

We first heard about the Japanese Chin puppy named Gizmo when Christy Doney, of Glenolden, Pa., called NBC 10 asking for help.

Christy bought the dog for her kids and then learned that Gizmo was sick, but the pet store where she bought the puppy had closed.

Since NBC 10 aired the story Wednesday night, there was a flood of help from station viewers.

When NBC 10 first visited on Wednesday, Gizmo had no energy and could barely lift her head, but on Thursday, it was like night and day. Gizmo barked for the first time and was jumping around like any other frisky puppy.

Wednesday, the family was treating Gizmo for pneumonia and was afraid that she might die, so the turnaround was amazing.

Thursday, a veterinarian and his wife offered to help out and save the 3-pound Chin.

"She offered to take care of the dog for us until it was up and running, back to health 100 percent and give her back free of charge," said Bill Doney, the family's dad.

The family bought Gizmo from the Family Pet Center in King of Prussia for $1,506, but when they realized their puppy was sick, they found out that the pet store went out of business and the medical warranty they purchased became worthless.

The vets bills were estimated to be in the thousands of dollars -- money the family does not have. But the vet and NBC 10 viewers have offered to solve those problems.

"I'm always out helping people. You don't expect it to happen to you. Now, it's happening. It's wonderful, wonderful," Bill Doney said.
