U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Philadelphia International Airport discovered more than 9 pounds of cocaine and marijuana stowed aboard an Air Jamaica flight Saturday. The cocaine has a street value of just over $40,000 and the marijuana street value is estimated at just over $4,000.Authorities were tipped off to the eight packages stowed aboard the plane a day after a crewmember notified CBP officers of the suspicious packages.
The four packages of cocaine weighed about 4.45 combined pounds, and the four packages of marijuana weighed about 4.65 combined pounds. Each package was wrapped tightly in brown tape and concealed in the top-sliding drawer of a catering cart in the rear galley area. CBP officers boarded the airplane and seized the narcotics. The flight, which originated in Kingston, Jamaica, stopped in Montego Bay, Jamaica, before reaching its final destination in Philadelphia at about 9:30 p.m."The additional scrutiny on international flights and the responsible actions by the airline industry have mostly deterred narcotics smuggling onboard commercial passenger aircraft, but smugglers will continue to probe ways to ship their deadly poison to the United States," said Allan Martocci, CBP area port director for the Port of Philadelphia. "I applaud the Air Jamaica crew for reporting these suspicious packages to CBP officers. It is good citizenry such as this that helps law enforcement stifle the bad guys' attempts to hurt good people."No arrests were made. The drugs will be destroyed, authorities said.
