UPDATED: 2:09 pm EDT May 9, 2008

Delaware state police said a trooper was driving home in a marked patrol vehicle when a woman driving a Hummer ran into him.

Police said Dana Smulski, 49, of Wilmington, was under the influence when she drove into the trooper on Kirkwood Highway near Greenbank Road Thursday night.

She was formally charged with DUI, having no proof of insurance and other traffic offenses. The trooper was transported to Christiana Hospital for observation and later released. Smulski was not injured.

The patrol car suffered substantial damage and the Hummer very little, police said.
