Teen Basketball Star Dies After Making Winning Shot

Family, Friends Mourn Berks County Teen Who Collapsed On Court

A Berks County teenager suddenly collapsed on a basketball court and died over the weekend.

While family and friends wait to hear the results of the autopsy, they're taking comfort in knowing Joshua Brown died while doing what he loved the most.

Video Report

Friends said the 17-year-old junior football and basketball star had a huge heart.

"He was always reliable. He always cared. He was there for you. It's just sad," Marcelius Marshall, a friend, said.

But it was that big heart that literally may have killed the popular high school athlete. According to his teammates, it was on the basketball court over the weekend when Brown suddenly collapsed during a game after making the winning shot.

"He just grabbed his arm and said, 'Oh Lord,' fell and just started shaking," a teammate said. "We thought it was a joke at first but it started getting serious after that."

Paramedics rushed the teen to a hospital where he died a short time later.

While the official cause of death is pending toxicology tests, Brown's family said doctors said the boy had an enlarged heart.

"Shock, to say the least, was the emotion," principal Mark Bellettiere said.

At Exter High School Bellettiere said they brought in grief counselors, allowing about 70 of Brown's friends and teammates to spend the day in the cafeteria, where they swapped stories about the budding rap star, who loved video games and had an infectious smile.

"He's one of those kids that, if you're having a bad day, would come down the hall and smile and say, 'How are you doing?' It would make you feel like a million dollars," Bellettiere said.

"Everyone's going to miss him. It's going to change everybody," Marcus Jackson, a friend, said.

Over Easter break, Exeter students will be making T-shirts with Brown's photograph to sell and raise money for his family. They have also organized a memorial for Wednesday night so together they can say goodbye.
