SALEM, N.J. -- Grand jurors in Salem County have indicted the star quarterback of a champion high school football team on aggravated sexual assault charges.Video Report
Justin Breaker was suspended from Glassboro High School and is free on $100,000 bail.
He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted. The Salem County prosecutor alleges that Breaker, then 18, and two other teens, including a juvenile, raped a 15-year-old girl in an apartment last April.A 16-year-old pleaded guilty to sexual assault and served 15 days in jail.Salem County records show Breaker spent five days in jail in April after the alleged incident. He transferred to Glassboro High School in Gloucester County over the summer and joined the football team, leading the Bulldogs to a South Jersey Group 1 championship over the weekend.School officials said they have received numerous calls from parents regarding Breaker. Some parents expressed disbelief over the rape allegations, but others said the high school should not have allowed him to play last weekend.Glassboro students NBC 10 talked to leaving school Thursday wished their star quarterback well."I hope he's safe, and everybody's thinking of him," said one male student. "… He's just a good person. I don't see him doing that. I don't see him throwing his life away.""I don't think that he did it because he comes over my house all of the time and he never like tried to do any of that stuff to us. I don't think he did it," said a female student. The coach and athletic director were unavailable for comment Thursday, but an administrator told NBC 10 how the indicted teen was allowed on the gridiron."The administration suspended Justin as soon as they learned about the indictment," said Heather Simmons, of the Glassboro schools.Asked if Breaker had shared information about the case with the coach or athletic director, Simmons said not to her knowledge. As for whether he received any preferential treatment, she said, "None whatsoever."Some parents NBC 10 talked to questioned if the popular athlete received star treatment, while other parents were OK with the decision to allow him to play sports."Innocent until proven guilty," said one parent. No one answered Thursday at Breaker's home. The Salem County district attorney said two things led to a delay in the indictment of Breaker. One was that a co-defendant of his pleaded guilty. Also, authorities were awaiting test results from a forensic lab.Breaker is due in court next week.
