Arrest Made In Connection With Suburban Store Robberies

UPDATED: 5:32 pm EDT September 5, 2007

Police made an arrest in connection with a string of robberies in Delaware County.

Police said Stephen Gary Sargeant of Chester was part of a team that targeted gas stations and convenience stores in Delaware County. He was arrested Wednesday morning.

Police said he admitted to robbing four stores in eastern Delaware County. The robberies were reported this past week in Darby Borough, Collingdale, Aldan and Yeadon.

Surveillance video showed what appeared to be a robbery in progress.

A storeowner said the man demanded cash Monday at a Sunoco in Collingdale.

"He said, 'Give me the money right now,'" Shalini Bansal said.

Bansal's family owns the store and was there when it occurred.

"We both were nervous and she started crying but we had to handle the situation, had to call police and everything," Bansal said.

Sargeant, 25, hid his face while police took him in to be processed Wednesday.

Police said he admitted to the Sunoco robbery and four others in Clifton Heights, Darby Borough and Yeadon and there may be others.

Police said in some instances Sargeant was armed with a knife or scissors.

It's a spree that officials said started last week and ended Wednesday morning when he robbed a 7-Eleven in Clifton Heights.

"Fortunately we had a witness. An employee of Clifton Heights Borough Highway Department watched the robbery occur and secured a good description of him," Chief Walter Senkow, of Clifton Heights Borough Police Department, said.

With a description, dozens of police officers from surrounding areas launched an all-out search.

Sargeant was arrested at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Zidan Ibrahim said he was robbed at knifepoint earlier this week at his son's store in Darby Borough.

"When I saw the knife I throw him and hit the deli case," he said.

The knife only got Ibrahim's thumb but the robber made off with some cash.

Police said Sargeant did not confess to the crime but they believe he may have been involved.

Police also think Sargeant had an accomplice.
