4 Hospitalized, 1 Charged After Police Van, Car Collide

PHILADELPHIA -- Four people were hospitalized when a police patrol wagon and a civilian vehicle collided Monday night in West Philadelphia, and the woman driver of the civilian car was charged with driving under the influence, police said.

The collision occurred at about 8 p.m. at North 50th Street and Westminster Avenue, sending two officers and two women from the car to the University of Pennsylvania Hospital.All four were still hospitalized Tuesday and listed in stable condition.Chopper 10 was over the scene as emergency responders pulled at the maroon car to free one of the women. Then, two of the injured were placed in ambulances and rushed to the hospital.
One of the women was unconscious for some time, and one of the officers collapsed from stress, police said.Witnesses told NBC 10 that the patrol wagon had no lights and sirens activated, was heading north and went through a red traffic signal before the wagon and maroon car collided.Police would not confirm those details but said that an open container of beer and a cup with some sort of alcohol in it were found inside the car, NBC 10's Mike Strug reported.Two blocks away from the scene of the police-involved crash, officers were in pursuit of another car that had been chased out of the 13th district in Southwest Philadelphia.Police said later Monday night that the collision at 50th and was not related to the chase on 52nd Street.The pursuit was called off for some time but then resumed when the suspects' vehicle went into Fairmount Park through a gate at North Horticultural Drive and Belmont Avenue, Strug reported. The vehicle went out of control and came to a stop against some bushes.One juvenile was taken into custody by 8:30 p.m., and officers were searching for two others.
