Bethlehem Township, Pa. -- Flies have made life miserable for residents of one Northampton County town.Outside, flies swarm. Resident Tom Poltorak skims hundreds of flies from his pool several times a day.Inside, residents wake up with flies on their face, on their food and on their toothbrushes. Fly strips dangle from the ceilings above the kitchen table and in the garage.
Residents of Bethlehem Township blame the 214 tons of chicken manure piled up at a neighboring farm. The farm belongs to John Miller. He leased part of his land to a farmer who uses the manure to fertilize organic soybeans. The manure was delivered earlier than possible to use.Miller admits the flies are a nuisance. But understands that this is corn-planting season.Township supervisors said their hands are tied. The Department of Environmental Protection regulates what farms can do, and the farmer is not in violation.Naturally, farms produce flies, odors and noises that can annoy its neighbors. The farm's lessee said he plans to begin plowing the manure soon. The flies should be gone in about three weeks.
