Sick Puppies Rescued From Shop By SPCA
Owner Accused Of Selling Sick Animals
Dozens of customers have complained to NBC 10 News that the puppies they bought at Puppies in Northeast Philadelphia were sick, or dying and on Wednesday the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals took action.
In an NBC 10 News exclusive, Doug Shimell was on the scene at Cottman and the Boulevard as the SPCA rescued nine sick puppies from the store.
Investigators said that they have been conducting inspections and looking into complaints that owner, Chuck Guthrie, has been selling sick and dying dogs.
NBC10 has also investigated more than a dozen complaints from customers like Tiffany Campana -- who bought supposedly healthy puppies from the pet store, only to find they were gravely ill. She said that she is glad the SPCA has finally stepped in.
"It's real good that they're doing something, because the store should not be selling sick pups. I'm happy they're doing it," Campana said.
The nine puppies removed from the store are being examined and if they survive they will be put up for adoption.
The SPCA said that the store and its owner are still under investigation and they are looking into whether any prosecution is warranted. Guthrie declined to comment to NBC 10 News.
