CHESTER, Pa. -- Angry parents yelled and screamed at school officials in Chester on Thursday night. They were furious over a proposal to cap the number of students who can attend Chester's charter schools.Emotions ran high as community members faced-off against a state-appointed control board. Hundreds of people -- some educators, but mostly parents -- showed for the meeting, held in a middle school to accomodate the crowd.
Parents at the meeting said that, if the proposal were approved, kids would suffer. But school officials said education is also their top priority. They fear that, if they allow enrollment to exceed the current number of about 2,500 students, schools will be fiscally strapped and unstable. It was tough for the board members to get one word in amidst the crowd of angry parents, NBC 10's Kristen Welker reported.Ultimately, board members decided to shelve the issue, saying they will vote at a later date. Parents were furious that no decision was made. One mother of nine children said she wants answers and the best for her kids."They're angry because don't want to hear us. They don't want to hear what we parents have to say. They don't have children in this school district," said parent Fay Bryant.According to one report, capping charter school enrollments could save the Delaware County school district $150 million over the next five years, Welker reported. The board is expected to vote by mid-April.
