Lehigh County, Pa. -- A coyote who attacked three people and two dogs in separate incidents in a Lehigh Valley neighborhood on Tuesday has tested positive for rabies, according to police. The coyote was tracked down in Palmer Township, Northampton County, on Newlins Mill Road and killed after the attacks. The animal had to be killed so it could be tested for rabies.A second victim of a potentially rabid coyote told NBC 10 about her encounter with the aggressive animal on Tuesday.
"I was screaming, 'oh, god,'" said Marie Torquati. She said she didn't know what was attacking her when she took out the trash Tuesday."It had a long ugly nose, it wasn't very tall, straggly," Torquati said. "I thought it was a wolf."Torquati had a finger wound. She's had 8 rabies shots since the attack.Joe Gerbino was also attacked in his yard when the coyote spotted his pet German shepherd dog.“(My dog) knew this was not a dog. . . So I kept the garbage can lid on (it) and forced it out of the yard. From there it just took off,” said Gerbino.“I feel bad for the coyote, but there are kids in the neighborhood, and at the bus stop,” said Gerbino. “Thank God there was no school today.”One police official who spoke with NBC 10 said he had never heard of a coyote attack in his 33 years on the police force.
