This dangerous cold is taking a toll on all of us. But just how prepared is your home for this deep freeze?A house in Barrington, New Jersey sustained thousands of dollars worth of water damage when pipes in the attic froze and then burst several weeks ago. The house was not occupied and the heat was turned down. Property damage experts from All Risk Incorporated say unoccupied houses like those being remodeled or shore houses are most at risk, but this could happen to anyone. They suggest keeping your thermostat to at least 60 degrees and know where your home's water valve is and how to turn it off.
All Risk Incorporated Emergency Service Supervisor Lou Crisci says, "Keep blinds closed, curtains closed. The idea is you keep the warm area in, the heat's going to rise. It's definitely going to help."Here are some more tips:If you're going to be away from your home for a few days, open up your cabinets. It allows warm air to go in and keep that area near your pipes warm.
Let water drip slowly from inside faucets.
Wrap exposed pipes located outside or in unheated areas of your home.
Cover vents around your home's foundation.
Take extra precautions to protect pipes that have frozen in the past.
