The Philadelphia food you love so much could change forever.City Council is considering banning all artificial trans fats in restaurants and other establishments.French fries and chicken wings, people love them, but they are loaded with artery clogging trans fats, which increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and bad cholesterol. That's why the City of Philadelphia held hearings today on legislation calling for a ban on artificial trans fats at all city restaurants and other food service establishments.
City Councilman Jim Kenney supports the ban. He says, "It's not an economic burden on restaurants and makes people healthier. It's kind of a no-brainer."Not according to J.P.Boles, Chef and Owner of the Ugly Moose in Manayunk. He says the city is constantly throwing up roadblocks for Philadelphia businesses and should concern itself with more important issues."Smoking is one thing. Me smoking a cigarette is going to affect the person next to me, but if i have a big plate of french fries and wings, that's on me. It's not going to affect your health at all," says Boles.Boles says he's also worried about how the city plans to enforce the ban. He says, "You have 300, 400 restaurants in the city..Who is going to go out there and monitor the whole situation?"The City says it will be a transitional change and be more educational than punitive.Devon Restaurant on Rittenhouse Square followed New York City's lead and eliminated trans fats about 2 weeks ago. Chef Jitendra Gulgule says the food tastes the same. "It's how we enhance the taste with seasons and seasonings and so forth. Oil is just a cooking material, "says Gulgule.
