Mom Credits Candy With Fast Delivery

You've probably heard some of the old wives tales about inducing labor -- eating spicy foods, rubbing yourself with primrose oil, drinking castor oil.

An Ohio man went to the pharmacy to get his wife some castor oil when the pharmacist said he had a better idea.

Baby Jacob came much faster than older brother Joey, who made mom go through almost 20 hours of labor.

The Flayers credit black licorice. The pharmacist told Flayer it would do the trick.

"He said he's had it work several times before so there must be a little something to the black licorice," new father Mark Flayer said.

"There are chemicals in it that tend to cause contractions of the uterus so it basically is an induction of labor," pharmacist Steve Bonfiglio said.

Bonfiglio does not suggest this for all pregnancies, but it certainly did work here.

"She said, ‘Well I'm not going to make it.’ And it was like five, well it was about right at 11 then, because she woke us up at five till, so I said, ‘Do you want me to call the rescue squad?’ And she said, ‘You probably ought to,’” Flayer said.

Mother and baby are both doing great.

"He wanted to get here quickly, so it's going to be interesting to see how he turns out when he grows up," Flayer said.
