A study out of UCLA is showing some amazing health results from a two-week Pritikin-like diet. The study shows that the brief diet can reverse type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.Fifty percent of the overweight people who spent three weeks on a very low-fat, high-fiber diet and also exercised, reversed their type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.Metabolic syndrome is a condition in which the patient has excessive abdominal fat, insulin resistance and high cholesterol. Many people believe you can't reverse diabetes, but the UCLA scientists said that the diet and exercise worked, even though the people remained overweight.
Asthma Medicine Could Be Dangerous
A common asthma medication could be dangerous -- especially for African-American patients. The drug is Serevent, and a study by the maker of the drug found a small but significant increase in respiratory- and asthma-related deaths among African-American patients.Researchers said more studies need to be done and that patients should not stop taking Serevent without talking to their doctor first.Sleep Inertia
Do you ever wake up after a good night's sleep and still feel groggy?Scientists call it "sleep inertia" and say it can be very serious.Researchers find that when you first wake up, you perform worse on simple tasks than if you were totally sleep deprived. The effects can last as long as two hours. This is especially important for emergency physicians and emergency workers who must wake up and immediately go to work.Copyright 2005 by NBC10.com.
