The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention has just released figures that show birth defects are the leading cause of infant deaths in the United States and that as many as 3 percent of all newborns are affected by birth defects. The study also found that the most common birth defect in the United States is a cleft lip, and Down syndrome is more common than previously thought. Experts now think 1 in every 733 babies is born with the genetic mutation.CDC officials said that many women can prevent defects by taking folic acid during their child-bearing years, before they get pregnant.

Some patients taking two popular diabetes drugs are reporting blurry vision and swelling of their legs and feet, according to the Food and Drug Administration and drug manufacturer Glaxo-Smithkline.The drugs are Avandia and Avandamet. Glaxo-Smithkline said that it has received "very rare reports of new or worsening diabetic macular edema, which is a swelling of a portion of the retina important for sight. This can cause blurry or distorted vision. The majority of the patients who have problems also report swelling of the legs, ankles and feet.Glaxo-Smithkline said that, sometimes, stopping treatment or reducing the dose eliminates or improves the condition. But don't do this on your own, contact your doctor before making any changes in your medication.Loud Noise Can Cause Tumor
Years of being exposed to loud noise can cause you to develop a tumor -- not a cancerous tumor, but one you don't want.A new study shows you can get an acoustic neuroma and that can lead to hearing loss.According to the research, loud music or loud power tools or any loud noise that's repeated causes the neuroma to grow and press on the cranial nerve that's responsible for sensing sound and helping with balance.Copyright 2005 by NBC10.com.
