There is a new and better way to protect your children from meningitis.The Food and Drug Administration has given French drug maker Sanofi Aventis the green light for Menactra.It is the first vaccine to protect against four different strains of the bacteria that cause meningitis and meningococcemia.Menactra is approved for people ages 11 to 55. It lasts longer than the current vaccine, which wears off after three to five years. A booster can extend Menactra's disease-fighting power.In the past two decades, meningococcal disease has dramatically increased among teens and young adults. The new vaccine could protect them into their college years, when they're most susceptible.
Good, Bad Cholesterol
When it comes to cholesterol, there is new proof that bumping up the good can be just as important as lowering bad levels.A new study shows taking medication to improve your HDL, or good cholesterol, also results in significantly lowering your LDL, or bad cholesterol.Men taking the drugs also showed a 50 percent drop in triglycerides and they lost weight to boot.The medications in the study have all been around for several years, including niacin, Gemfibrozil and cholestyramine.Quiz For ADHD
