Many of us assume the worst aging of our skin occurs when we hang out in the summer sun, but medical reporter Cherie Bank says that you can get unexpected sun damage just by driving your car.Window glass blocks all of the UVB rays -- the burning rays of the sun. However, window glass does not block UVA rays, which Dr. Eric Bernstein, a dermatologist, says can also cause skin aging and cancer."Look at this soccer ball. It used to be bright orange. But the sun beat down on it through a garage window and (faded it). That's what the sun does to your skin, too, through the window of your car," Bank said.Jennifer Raio is the main driver for her family and it all shows on her face. She is only 34 and she already has age spots on her face. Those spots are smaller on the right side of her face than they are on the left side because she is always the driver."People have more sun damage on the left side because that's the driver side and the sun is constantly coming through the window hitting them on that side of the face," Bernstein said.If you look at people in Australia or England, where they drive on the other side of the road, it is the right side of their faces that get the most damage. If you are usually the passenger in a vehicle, the worst damage on your face would be on the right side.Bernstein said that the UVA rays also cause unwanted spider veins, enlarged pores, fine lines and wrinkles and sagging skin.He suggests wearing sunscreen all year. You may also want to consider putting a clear tint on your car windows."The idea of the film is it filters out all of the ultraviolet rays, UVB, UVA, 99.9 percent," said Bob Veihmeyer, of Delval Window Tint.Veihmeyer said that the window tint is clear, so it is legal to put on your car. It costs around $250 for four windows."I am 100 percent sure that if you wear sunscreen every day and tint your windows, you will unquestionably slow down the aging process, period," Bernstein said.Related Resources:
