Grand View Hospital Patient Devastated Over Mistake

Hospital Says Endoscope Not Properly Cleaned

A patient at Grand View Hospital is speaking out about the hospital's mistake.

The hospital admitted in a letter to patients that procedures for cleaning an endoscope were not followed completely and that could put patients at risk for infectious diseases.

"I was devastated! I was crying my eyes out. I didn't know what to do," said a woman who spoke to NBC 10 News on the condition that she was not identified.

The call from the doctor horrified her. The colonoscopy the 23-year-old underwent at Grand View Hospital in Sellersville Dec. 1 might have been done with an improperly sterilized endoscope that was used to take pictures of her lower intestine.

An endoscope is a camera used to probe inside the body. If it is not properly cleaned, some patients may be at some risk for infection, including HIV and hepatitis. The hospital recommended the woman be tested for HIV and hepatitis B and C.

"That day when the doctor called, I wanted to rip my skin off. I felt dirty inside," the woman told NBC 10 News.

A letter sent to patients states, "We have learned that the endoscope was subjected to five of the six cleaning and disinfecting procedures."

The hospital believes the potential problem involves patients who were at the Grand View Short Stay Department on Dec. 1 and Dec. 10 and had any of the following four procedures done:

  • Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD)
  • Colonoscopy
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Laryngoscopy

One of the leading makers of endoscope sterilizing equipment is located in Ivyland, Pa. -- Custom Ultrasonics.

Dr. Larry Muscarella said that if Grand View Hospital got through the cleaning, rinsing and germicide treatments, patients shouldn't panic.

"I would make sure I had blood tests to check for any possible viruses ... to look for any possible bronchoscopy for infections. But I'm fairly confident none of patients will come down with an infection as a result of this," Muscarella said.

Grand View Hospital is telling patients that there is only a one in 2 million chance that they will contract the virus.

"I don't believe them and I don't trust them. I trusted them the first time with my life. I can't trust them again," the woman said.
