KGB Hangover Cure Hitting American Store Shelves

RU-21 Proponants Say Supplement Eliminates Toxic Byproducts Of Alcohol

What used to be a top secret Russian hangover remedy is hitting store shelves across the United States.

According to NBC 10 medical reporter Cherie Bank, the KGB hangover cure is now at the top of the most wanted list for people in the party set.

The little white pills, originally dubbed the KGB pill, were developed and tested by Russian military scientists. Now, many people -- even supermodels -- are raving about the benefits of the dietary supplement RU-21.

"It helps you eliminate the most toxic byproduct of alcohol metabolism," said Dr. Igor Persidsky.

While the drug won't kill your buzz, it does promise to stave of the negative effects of alcohol like organ damage, aging skin and hangovers.

Persidsky is so impressed with RU-21 he takes it himself. "It's harmless, it's readily available, it's inexpensive."

RU-21 is an over-the-counter dietary supplement. It has been a hot seller online and now is hitting stores coast-to-coast.

Marketers of the pill said years of studies in the former Soviet Union prove RU-21 is safe and effective. But some experts in the United States aren't quite ready to toast RU-21.

"There's just not a miracle pill out there just yet," said Ron Griffin, of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence.

Griffin said more research is needed and there is another issue. "We are concerned about he message it's going to be sending to people."

Griffin believes RU-21 will give people a false sense of security. "It appears to make drinking consequence free or risk free. We're concerned about the implications to society."

But fans of the pill said it is not about giving people permission to drink.

Model Beverly Peele lives in the fast lane. She said she takes responsibility for her actions, but she is still glad RU-21 is on her side.

"When I get older, I don't want to have liver damage. If you're health conscious, then it's a very good thing to take," Peele said.

Because RU-21 is a dietary supplement, it doesn't need approval from the Food and Drug Administration, so you take it at your own risk.

If you want it, you can find it online. It will also be available soon at some health stores or supermarkets.
