Your pets are eating it, but it could be making you sick.Federal health officials said dry dog food could be the cause of human infections.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some salmonella cases in people have been linked to dry dog food.Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause diarrhea, fever and stomach pain. The CDC said children and infants are most vulnerable. They said about 70 salmonella cases have been linked to dry dog food in 2006 and 2007.Nineteen states have reported illness. The largest number of cases is in Pennsylvania. Most involve children 3 years old and younger. It's unclear how the salmonella got into the dog food.CDC investigators said the dog food linked to the cases was made at Mars Pet Care, in Pennsylvania. There are no reports of pets becoming ill.Doctors said the best thing to do to prevent it is avoid touching the food.Use a scoop or plastic gloves when feeding pets, always wash hands after touching the food and keep children away.
