Daily Dose: Government Wants To Block Mad Cow Testing; Pot Can Lead Teens To Consider Suicide

The U.S. government wants to block any more testing for mad cow disease

Mad cow disease is a fatal condition that affects the central nervous system of cattle.

A form of the disease called Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease affects humans and the best evidence available showed they get it from eating beef from cattle with mad cow disease.

Less than 1 percent of the cows used for meat in the country are tested for the disease.

The White House is asking the courts to stop meat-packers from testing all their cattle for mad cow.

Government lawyers asked a panel of judges to reverse a court order allowing more comprehensive testing.

The government argued that widespread testing does not guarantee food safety.

Many overseas customers are demanding the extra tests.

Some slaughterhouses said the federal government has no authority to prevent testing animals for the disease.

Pot Can Lead Teens To Consider Suicide

Marijuana use can lead some teens to consider suicide, according to a new government study.

Researchers said teenagers who suffered from depression during the past year are more than twice as likely to have smoked pot than their peers who haven't dealt with depression.

Those who used marijuana at least once a month were also more likely to have suicidal thoughts.

The report from the Office of National Drug Control Policy is based on a review of about a dozen published studies.
