Children aren't the only ones harmed by secondhand smoke; it can also be just as bad for pets.Animals are also susceptible to all the health hazards of secondhand smoke.Pets who live in a home with smokers are much more likely to develop several types of cancer.Researchers at Oklahoma State University said cats are twice as likely to develop malignant lymphoma than those living in smoke-free homes. It's a cancer that kills three out of four affected cats within a year. They also said cats are at greatest risk for mouth cancer because of their grooming habits. They lick up the cancer-causing carcinogens that accumulate on their fur.Dogs are more at risk for nasal tumors and lung cancer.Nicotine poisoning can also occur in animals. If your pet eats a cigarette, it could kill them. There is also new research out of Philadelphia that found smoking and breastfeeding can cause babies to sleep less, and not as well. The culprit is nicotine, which is passed through the mother's milk.
