Cookies that crush your hunger and help you lose weight may sound too good to be true, but one doctor says it's not."When I think about cookies I think about fattening foods. I think about sweet, a satisfying treat, not a diet-type food," said Jackie Smith, of Lumberton, N.J.Dr. Sanford Siegal calls them diet cookies."There's nothing terribly surprising about this. I have baked into the cookie substances, food substances, that are hunger suppressing and as a result someone is able to eat a low-calorie diet and maintain weight," Siegal said.

Siegal said a unique combination of amino acids suppresses hunger and the cookies, once available only through a doctor's office or online, are now available over-the-counter at the Morristown Mall, the first cookie kiosk in the country."I would say that the most popular are chocolate and oatmeal raisin," sales woman Paula Aberman said.Customers sold on the idea that a cookie, once known only as a treat, may just be the secret formula they've been looking for."I like sweet stuff, and if you like sweet stuff and when you go on a diet that's usually the first thing you need to get rid of," said Veronica Carroll, of Morristown, N.J.Dr. Scott Greenberg said diets like the cookie diet must be monitored by a doctor."People will try them for a little bit. They're not going to be successful on their own, and they're going to end up gaining the weight back. They really need to be medically monitored and medically supervised in order to be successful," Greenberg said, who has launched his own cookie diet.Siegal said the cookies can be used as a snack or meal replacement and it says right on the package that medical supervision is recommended."The doctor is the one who will make the decision as to how many calories this person should have," Siegal said. "Of course, the lower the calories the faster the weight loss."So can a cookie curb your hunger and yield results? Some people at the Morristown Mall are willing to find out."You always feel fat. You're never happy with yourself, so if a cookie diet would work, I'd be on it," said Theresa Ezzo, of Mount Laurel.
