PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia City Council took a step toward making the city healthier on Thursday, but many there are mixed emotions among those in the restaurant industry. The council voted unanimously Thursday to ban the use of trans fats at all restaurants in the city.If signed by Mayor John Street, the measure would prohibit the use of trans fats in restaurants on Sept. 1, and in bakeries one year later.Violators would get warnings, not fines.Street has been in favor of the ban and is expected to sign the bill. The sponsor of the plan, Councilman Juan Ramos, said he might seek to amend the law to include fines if too many restaurants keep trans fats on their menus.
