Philly Could Follow NY By Banning Trans Fat In Restaurants

UPDATED: 7:19 am EST January 25, 2007

Philadelphia City Council planned to hold hearings on Thursday on trans fat legislation, which could ban restaurants from using the artery-clogging substance if passed.

Earlier in the week, dining services at Saint Joseph’s University announced it would stop using trans fat in February, and other chains like Wendy’s Starbucks, Subway, Denny’s, Chili’s, Ruby Tuesday’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken also voiced their plans to eliminate or sharply reduce the dangerous fat from their menus, according to a news release from Councilman Juan F. Ramos’ office.

Trans fat is an artificial fat that increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and bad cholesterol. Many restaurants prefer the fat because it has a long shelf life.

Philadelphia Mayor John Street said he supports the legislation.
