Store Saves Earth With Bamboo Undies, Poo Products

At first glance, Earthmart looks like any other variety store in a small town, complete with food, clothing and school supplies.

But when customers look at the labels, it becomes very apparent the store carries ecologically friendly products for people like Danielle Charry, who want to take care of the planet.

"We only have one earth," she said. "We have to take care of it."

Earthmart is located in Phoenxville, just outside Philadelphia, and everything in the store is organic or recycled, has not been made by child labor and is energy efficient or locally produced.

"My focus is to live a creative life," owner Michael Biddison said. "It's more creative to be environmentally friendly."

At Earthmart, customers can buy things like bowls, glasses and goblets made from recycled glass and in America.

And their sweaters are made from organic cotton, free of harmful chemicals. The cotton was harvested in fields and gardens free of pesticides. The store also sells plates made of bamboo and candles that don't give off any soot.

Need a pair of socks? How about environmentally friendly socks?

Earthmart carries ones made by the "Sock Lady" in Vermont, and they are made from recycled T-shirts. It's not only the socks that are recycled -- so are the toilet paper and school supplies, including notebooks made from banana paper (the proceeds are used to help protect the rainforests).

Pants and purses, even underwear? Thye're made from sustainable bamboo.

But the store's biggest seller in the store is the Mr. Eli poo paper, where all proceeds to back to Sri Lanka to help keep the elephants wild.

On average, recycled goods cost more than products bought at a big box store. In the short term, people may have to dig a little deeper for environmentally friendly products, but the many customers who shop at Earthmart think it's a small price to pay for keeping the world as we know it green for future generations.
