Amy And Nick Spill The Beans On 'Today'

Pair Talk About Show, Relationship

POSTED: 8:53 am EDT April 9, 2004

On Friday's "The Today Show," Apprentice contestants Nick and Amy tell the details of their relationship and their experience on Thursday's show. Also: Amy explains why she posed in a men's entertainment magazine recently.

Matt Lauer interviewed the pair.

Matt: Nick Warnock and Amy Henry, Good Morning.

Both: Good morning.

Matt: Can I just say that the interviews (on Thursday's show), they were brutal. I thought the tone at some times, it was like they were about to shine a light in your face and drip water on your head. Were you surprised at how tough they were?

Nick They were extremely harsh, and I was surprised, actually.

Amy: They were very tough, and I think that the problem that I ran into is we spent so much time focusing on tasks at hand that when it came time to go into real interviews, we'd forgotten to prepare for the interview.

Matt: Which comes down to the major part of any process to get a job.

Amy: Not to mention we had just come back from Mara Lago.

Matt: So your defenses were down?

Nick: You could say that.

Matt: You were the first to be fired. I was surprised because a lot of the Apprentice castoffs came here and said you were their favorite. They thought you had the best chance to win. What went wrong with you?

Nick: I was surprised as well. I think it was the interviews. I came in too salesy, and too high energy. They were looking for someone more reserved and laid back.

Matt: They said you were too slick, too much of a salesman, not too intelligent. That's a little harsh, isn't it?

Nick: It was very harsh, they probably could have rephrased that so it wouldn't sound so negative.

Matt: They also said you weren't a good leader and you go back and look at the tasks where you were the team leader.

Nick: I'm 3-0.

Matt: Amy they said about you, you were a Stepford wife, irritating, boring, and Trump bought it.

Amy: Yeah, and I think Trump still said it best in the board room, you know, 'Amy, time and time again, in the tasks you've been a leader and the superstar.' And I think it shows that I'm a great team player and great leader for the right environment. And I think I didn't fit in that conservative culture. That happens in the real world.

Matt: But what surprised me, Amy, is he had a high opinion of you, why did he listen to his own executives and not go with his own gut?

Amy: In the real world he needs to look and say who is going to fit with my executives and who is going to fit in the organization. And he recognized she may be a great team player but probably not someone who fits within our conservative culture.

Matt: All right, that's the boring stuff. Are you guys dating? I mean come on half the show centered around this relationship you guys had. What is it?

Amy: It's a showmance.

Nick: We dated briefly, yeah, for a short period after the show. But you know, we're two strong players aligning to try to get ahead.

Matt: That's what I mean. So it doesn't continue. You met each other's families, right?

Amy: I met his.

Matt: So you're not an item today.

Nick: No, not an item.

Matt: Okay, Amy, what about Bill? Are you an item with Bill?

Amy: No, that's what I learned by reading the press. We are props for press, whatever you want to call it. It's always amusing to learn about yourself in the press. I'm sure you've had the same challenges.

Matt: From time to time. Good clue, let's move on. I like what you said, you said that Amy broke your heart. Now you're calling out to all the women in America to heal.

Nick: I would like to take this opportunity to reach out to the women in America to help me. These are troubling times. What can I say?

Matt: Talk to me about Bill and Kwame. Who has the best shot at winning?

Nick: It is interesting, because you have Kwame, the M.B.A. guy, real smart. And you have the entrepreneur. Bill's real smart as well. But just two different aspects and they bring strong qualities to the table.

Amy: I think Bill over and over again doing the task has proven through actions that he's a very qualified candidate. Kwame on the other hand is very eloquent in the boardroom, and I think that is a skill that's important in today's business, you have to be able to talk the talk and walk the walk. So I think it will come down to who fits within Trump's organization. They're both well qualified.

Matt: So Amy what happens to you after all of this? After the show and the showmance. By the way, can I put the picture up of you and some of the other castoffs in FHM? Do I even need to ask what happens after this?

Amy: I would say that's one thing that I wish I had thought a little bit harder before I --

Matt: You regret that?

Amy: I think the pictures came off very classy, and I think I look pretty good. However, it's not really the image that I wish to portray, and I think it's something that all people in reality shows get caught up in which is oh, we've got press. Not the best decision.

Nick: You did look great. You looked great.
