Tax Question: Will E-Filing Be Free This Year?

POSTED: 2:43 pm EST January 31, 2006

"Last year, thru (sic) the irs.gov website, there were various links for H&R Block and other online tax preparers that were free as long as you went thru (sic) the IRS website. Will that be available this year?" David, in Woodcrest, N.J., asked NBC 10.

Special Section: Tax Section

The answer is yes, but the rules have changed a bit.

Seventy percent of the country's taxpayers are eligible for free tax preparation software and free electronic filing.

The service is free for people who make an adjusted gross income of $50,000 or less.

Each software company has different eligibility requirements, so check them out carefully before deciding.
