Roundup: Online Phishing Scams; Ebay Boxes At UPS

POSTED: 3:12 pm EDT June 21, 2004

The newest way for thieves to get your personal information is online through a scam called phishing.

But now, there's a way to protect yourself.

Phishing is an e-mail scam we've told you about before that tries to trick consumers into giving personal information like credit or debit card numbers or checking account numbers online.

You'll get an e-mail that looks legitimate from a bank or maybe a credit card company asking for your information, but it's a scam.

Now the Better Business Bureau, Visa and the Federal Trade Commission are launching a campaign to make consumers aware of this scam.

And as part of the campaign, Visa is offering free phishing prevention kits. To get one, you can go to www.visa.com/phishing.

There is a new way for you to sell your stuff on eBay without going online.

A company called Auction Drop allows you to drop your items off to them and they sell them on eBay for you.

Starting this week, UPS stores will now be Auction Drop points where consumers can drop off their stuff.

"This process is so convenient for me, because now I can just literally throw everything in my car, go down the street to the UPS store, drop all my stuff off, and they handle everything from there," said one potential customer. "They send it over to Auction Drop, and it's out of my hands until get the check."

For more information, go to www.auctiondrop.com.
