Pa. May Soon Have Lemon Law For Computers

Manufacturers Would Have To Repair Problems Up To 24 Months After Purchase

A lemon law that would protect your computer is in the works in Pennsylvania.

In Philadelphia Friday, lawmakers heard from consumers about the proposed law. Under the bill, computer manufacturers would have to repair any problems within 24 months after the purchase, at no cost to the consumer.

Manufacturers would also be required to make any fixes and return the computer within five days of hearing from the consumer.

The Consumer Affairs committee of the Pennsylvania House heard from consumers about their computer frustrations.

"We had nothing but corruption problems over and over again. I'm gonna guess a year-and-a-half. And the manufacturer would just keep trying with tech support over and over and over again," said Don DeNenno, of West Chester, Pa.

"What we're saying is look if the manufacturer is going to have a warranty. Let's get two years of quality service out of that computer, and two years is reasonable for a $1,500 or $2,000 product. If the manufacturer can't make good and make that repair that's necessary in a reasonable time -- within a few days -- then they should buy it back," said Craig Kimmel, a consumer attorney.
